MOTHER'S DAY will, without a doubt, have you laughing! This film, though emotional, is light-hearted and fun. It follows a handful of storylines, and similar to the LOVE ACTUALLY model, many of those plots connect and some point in the film. It spans a couple of days leading up to Mother's Day and describes many different types of motherhood. You have your single mother, the adoption story, lesbian mothers, the step mother, the divorcee, and even the widowed father. Among all this, the mother's of the mother's even make appearances.
The overall technical execution of the film was much like your typical romantic comedy and I do feel that that worked very well. There was a lot of information that needed to be grasped by the audience and it made more sense to do that without hidden meaning in obscure camera shots. They could have failed if the story wasn't there, or if the characters weren't developed as well as they were. What really helped them here was the casting. The film was blessed with a killer cast with names such as: Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis. Of course, many teens and 20-somethings also know the name, Shay Mitchell. Though she is well-versed in the acting world and exceptionally well-known for her role in tv's PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, this was really a breakout film role for her. Not only was it her first major film, it was also an entirely different role than that of Emily Fields in the hit TV show.
This is one of those films that will likely be timeless in the world of romantic comedies. Though the romance bit isn't as straightforward, it exists in between the lines and does play a part in connecting plot lines. I would see this film again and I would urge most people to see this film. I feel that it can be enjoyed by most people 14 and older. There is some language and content that may not be appropriate for younger audiences.
