THE CHOICE: A Review

For a while there I was making some series headway on my Oscar Noms viewing list, then I went to California and am now a bit behind. However, I did get to see The Choice the other day after finishing the book. The book was a great read and the movie was mediocre in comparison, yet still fairly good. The film is about Gabby and Travis, two people who learn that life is about your series of choices and decisions and those decisions make up who you are and what becomes of you. Despite both of them being in partially satisfying relationships they fall in love and the rest is history until tragedy strikes and Travis is forced to make a choice for the both of them.

The film was well imagined in terms of cinematography and production design. It was beautiful, yet subdued enough to fit the characters' small-town lifestyle. Gorgeous shots will make you fall even deeper in love with Nicholas Sparks' latest love story. However, I felt myself noticing the editing, which can be very distracting, especially for a film student. I was anticipating cuts and being thrown off by cuts that were a tad out of place. In parts it almost hindered the actors' exceptional performances, because it countered their natural timing.

It was probably unfortunate that I read the book before seeing the film, because it is so difficult to make a film better than the book. If you want both worlds, read the book after you've seen the movie. Overall, it was a good film and a great way to boost your confidence in love.
