ROOM: A Review

ROOM seems to be a breakout film for Brie Larson, as far as performance is concerned. Before this she has done small indies and more notably, "The Spectacular Now" and "Trainwreck". In both films she played smaller roles that did not give her the opportunity to shine. In ROOM, she plays a mother who was kidnapped at age 17 and then rapped repeatedly by her kiddnapper. Eventually she birthed a son and then raised her son in a single room that was built into a shack in this man's backyard. The film is about strength; finding it, embracing it and keeping it.

I was very impressed with how beautiful the film looked. The production design was earily fitting for the story and the cinematography matched the darkness of the subject matter very nicely. What stood out to me the most when watching this film was the performances. Brie Larson (Joy) and Jacob Tremblay (Jack) knocked it out of the park. I kept having to remind myself that this kid is playing a five year old boy, because his acting was suberb. You do not see that in kids, especially in a breakout performance. Brie Larson also did a great job. When she started breaking down it felt completly real to me and I had empathy for her.

This film is a difficult pill to swallow and probably isn't for everyone, but it is without a doubt a great film!
