Prepare for a shorter review on this one, just because it took be a while before I could get the time to write it. JOY was one of the films this past year that I was looking most forward to, and that is mainly because I am a huge fan of JLaw. She really brings her all to her roles and JOY was no exception. The biggest disappointment for me was the lack of exceptional acting for the other players. The only other person I was truly entertained by was Joy's mother, played by Virginia Madsen. She fully enveloped this broken and axiety-ridden character. Watching her I felt my own anxieties bubbling to the surface and I cringed every time you could see the fear come up in her eyes. This was surprising not because I didn't expect it from her, but because I was expecting more from Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper. In their defense, the writers and producers didn't really give them the most challenging roles, but when you think about it, this film was about the females.
Keeping that in mind, I was blown away by the overall story of the film and the film's writing. This is one of the most inspirational films I have ever seen. It empowers the female character during a time when women were oppressed in the business world. But not only that, this film could really be inspirational for anyone!
I recommend this film for anyone in their teens and above. There is some language and content that may not be appropriate for all ages, but I firmly believe that anyone above that age could enjoy this movie if they embrace the message.
