THE INTERN: A Review

It took me a while to finally see The Intern, and at first I was hesitant, knowing that I am often hot or cold with Anne Hathaway. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the movie overall! There was nothing original about the camera movements, lighting or even the production design, BUT Robert DeNiro certainly still has it! He may not be dishing out the same caliber performances he did thirty plus years ago, but lately he seems to have taken on a whole new persona when it comes to his acting. His character was undeniably loveable and incredibly endearing. Parts of the film felt a little predictable and Anne Hathaway's character, Jules, wasn't as developed as I would have liked, but overall it was two hours well spent.

The film seemed to mimic many other corporate-world films, with a head strong boss, who has her secret flaw or heartache. For Jules it was her dying relationship with her husband and for me it just seemed a little too predictable. All the actors played it out incredibly well though and I am happy, yet sorry to say that the major downfalls, for me, came from the script and the story. For example, Jules answers costumer service calls to stay grounded in the foundation of her company, yet her employees describe her as tough and the scene in which she first meets DeNiro, she seems like she could care less about him or his success in the company. For me, this didn't exactly make sense. Additionally, the big affair was revealed in such a cliche way that I almost wanted to scream. I can think of a handful of films that used the "I'm too sick" excuse to reveal an affair. These things considered, Hathaway and DeNiro seemed to handle their characters extremely well and I truly fell for both of them.

Should you see this movie? Definately. Will it be nominated for any Oscars this year? I doubt it.
